Writer's block and How I Cope

Updated: Feb 5, 2019

Writer's block is one of those things that almost every writer/author struggles with (though I can't speak for everyone). I have sat down with the intention of writing only to stare with blank fascination at the computer screen. It can be frustrating, unnerving, and downright mystifying. Why have my thoughts left me or why can't I form a coherent idea for another story? Some writers turn to books for inspiration (has never worked for me) while other writers will pack up their laptops and meander over to their local coffee shop (doesn't work for me, I can never concentrate with people around) with the hope a change of scenery will rev up their imagination.

I can't fault what works for them, but it doesn't work for me. I have found writing "prompts" work for me, and I have created my own version of writing prompts which I call "Gnomisms". I use Gnomisms to practice dialogue, mood, to showcase my special kind of humor. If I find myself struggling to write on my latest project, I set everything aside and without much thought to content, go and play with the gnomes. I invaribly feel energized, excited, and ready to tackle my other projects.

Granted, not everyone wants to play with gnomes, but the point of the activity is this: To practice your craft, to exercise your mind, and to rediscover the joy in what you do.
